North Bench Harvest started because Amélie has an obsession with coffee that isn’t going away. It began on a rainy camping trip when she was six — her stepmom’s coffee, too much sugar and cream, and somehow still the best thing she’d ever tasted. It stuck. Through high school and coffee shop culture back home in Quebec, and every year since.
Kyle got dragged in. Then he got genuinely hooked.
Once the idea had been percolating long enough to take seriously, the question became: why are we doing this, and who are we doing it for?
The answer: we roast because we care about the whole chain. The farmers who grow it. The land it comes from. The people who drink it. We source sustainable, high-elevation green coffee, and we prioritize buying from women-owned farms — currently that means growers in Rwanda, Colombia, Mexico, and Guatemala. Not because it’s a label to put on a bag, but because it’s the actual reason Amélie wanted to build this business in the first place.
We also wanted Golden, BC to have a locally roasted option worth being proud of. Small town. High standards.
Who does what: Amélie co-founded North Bench Harvest and leads part of it — sourcing, roasting decisions, and the part of the job she loves most, cupping every single batch for quality. (It’s just an excuse to drink more coffee, and she’s not sorry about it.)
Kyle is a part owner, and he’s the reason the roaster — and everything running behind the scenes — actually works. We’re a two-person team, and we like it that way.
One day we hope to bring some of what we grow in our own garden to the farmers’ market too — which is where the name comes from. Stay tuned.
